I write songs and music, I sing and play piano and guitar and have dabbled in the drums, harmonica and French horn. I play music because it makes me high. My musical loves are quirky lyrics, haunting melodies, odd sounding instruments, killer chord progressions, unusual vocal harmonies, descending baselines and a raw, true-sounding voice. I heard a singer-songwriter recently say: Fantasy is what we want, but reality is what we need. I am seeking whatever is real. As far as I can tell thus far, art and the heart rule. The best decisions I've ever made have come from anywhere but my mind. Friedrich Nietzsche said .... We have art so that we may not die of reality. The trick, I find, is keeping art and self-expression at the top of the priority list - it has a way of sliding down and disappearing. When I start feeling dissatisfied, I know it's time to pull myself away from any of my many distractions and start writing or playing an instrument or singing. Anything at all that comes out will be better than some of the crap that I let hang around inside.
